I just looked up the word crenellations; "to furnish with crenels or battlements".

So I looked up the word crenels; "An open space or notch between two merlons in a battlement or crenelated wall".

So I looked up the word merlons; "A solid portion between two crenels in a battlement or crenelated wall".

I have come to the conclusion that it's the jaggedy bit of the top of a castle.

To be even more shocking, we did at one point on our perambulations see a set of crenellations that were themselves crenellated. Recursive!
