Glove pattern
Nov. 7th, 2008 12:19 pmFor those as is int'rested, here's the pattern I've used for most of the gloves I've made recently.
Gloves (based on "Hand in Glove" pattern in an old Woman's Weekly magazine, converted to circular knitting)
-------------------------------------

Materials:
~100g double-knit yarn
One set 3mm DPNs
One set 3.25mm DPNs
Darning needle
Row counter
Abbreviations:
k = knit
p = purl
inc. 1 = increase by knitting into front then back of same stitch
st = stitch
m1 = make one (pick up the bar between stitch just knitted and next stitch with left needle, knit into back of it with right needle)
Using 3mm needles, cast on 44 sts, divide between 4 DPNs, and work in the round.
Work 30 rounds k1, p1 rib - on LAST row inc. 1 at last st - 45 sts.
Change to 3.25mm needles and k 12 rounds.
Shape thumb gusset:
1st Round: k21, m1, k3, m1, k to end of round
2nd and all alternate rounds: K
3rd Round: k21, m1, k5, m1, k to end of round
5th Round: k21, m1, k7, m1, k to end of round
7th Round: k21, m1, k9, m1, k to end of round
8th Round: K
You should have 53 sts
Make the thumb:
Using a long waste piece of yarn as a "lifeline", thread ALL sts. onto waste yarn and break the working end of the yarn (leaving enough to darn in the end later).
Pick up the centre 11 sts onto a DPN (this should correspond to the thumb gusset).
Re-join the yarn and k. these 11 sts then cast on an additional 3 sts after you have knitted them - 14 sts.
Split these between 3 DPNs.
For fingerless gloves: work 9 rounds k. then cast off.
For gloves with fingers: work 18 rounds k. (or length required) then break yarn and draw through sts tightly.
Palm:
Pick up and k. the first 21 sts on the "lifeline", then pick up and k. 3 sts. from the cast-on sts at base of thumb, then pick up and k. the remaining sts. from lifeline - 45 sts.
K. 10 rounds - you can now remove the "lifeline".
Make the first finger:
Using a long waste piece of yarn as a "lifeline", thread ALL sts. onto waste yarn and break the working end of the yarn (leaving enough to darn in the end later).
Pick up the centre 13 sts onto a DPN (this should leave 16 unworked sts. left on the "lifeline" each side of finger sts.).
Re-join the yarn and k. these 13 sts then cast on an additional 2 sts after you have knitted them - 15 sts.
Split these between 3 DPNs.
For fingerless gloves: work 8 rounds k. then cast off.
For gloves with fingers: work 24 rounds k. (or length required) then break yarn and draw through sts tightly.
Make the second finger:
Rejoin yarn then pick up and k. the 6 sts. next to the first finger, pick up and k 2 sts. from the base of first finger, pick up and k. the 6 sts. after the first finger, then cast on an additional 2 sts. - 16 sts.
Split these between 3 DPNs.
For fingerless gloves: work 9 rounds k. then cast off.
For gloves with fingers: work 26 rounds k. (or length required) then break yarn and draw through sts tightly.
Make the third finger:
Rejoin yarn then pick up and k. the 5 sts. next to the second finger, pick up and k 2 sts. from the base of second finger, pick up and k. the 5 sts. after the first finger, then cast on an additional 2 sts. - 14 sts.
Split these between 3 DPNs.
For fingerless gloves: work 8 rounds k. then cast off.
For gloves with fingers: work 22 rounds k. (or length required) then break yarn and draw through sts tightly.
Make the fourth finger:
Rejoin yarn then pick up and k. the 5 sts. next to the third finger, pick up and k 2 sts. from the base of second finger, pick up and k. the 5 sts. after the third finger - 12 sts.
Split these between 3 DPNs.
For fingerless gloves: work 7 rounds k. then cast off.
For gloves with fingers: work 18 rounds k. (or length required) then break yarn and draw through sts tightly.
Remove "Lifeline".
Darn in all ends.
Make a second glove the same way.

Date: 2008-11-07 12:46 pm (UTC)Aaaagh! The angles... the horror... the noneuclidan geometry! Iä! Iä!
Seriously though, I can't help but wonder if a gloves pattern in an old WW is one of my mother's. I know she used to work for them.

Date: 2008-11-07 01:00 pm (UTC)I decided to keep the numeric values the same but re-write it the way I use it - plus this also means I've not just ripped off someone else's pattern by copying it exactly.
OK, so I worked from a photocopy which is probably *technically* not allowed, but all the same.. ;)
